Unexpected adult content popping up

Please, please, someone help me with this. My brother used our computer and we don't know how he did it, but wound up getting some adult content popping up everywhere on our computer. I am so frustrated because it's not going away. My brother told us he panicked and did some kind of system restore but some stuff kept popping back up like on Favorites and on the desktop and some global dialer started popping up as well. Well, it's crazy. I've tried deleting everything but when you start up the computer again it keeps coming back. I'm desperate!! Can someone tell me the best way for me to get my computer back to normal.

Hiya, these are maddening aren't they?| You'll probably need to remove
the relevant entries from your registry - next time they pop up try to make
a note of their URLs etc to find them there.
Also try one (or all!) of these to avoid it happening again:
www.panicware.com (pop-up killer, free - very good!)
www.analog.com (POW! pop-up killer, free but a bit slow)
www.pestpatrol.com (will find and remove the offending files on your
computer - free or trial version available, very reliable)

Good luck!

Download and use Ad-adaware from www.lavasoftusa.com. It's free. Run it
every week or so to continue to keep your system free of these malicious
pop-ups and other associated spyware.

I've also read in several places that you should disable the 'messenger'
service that runs by default in XP. This is not the Instant Messenger but a
program that listens for network alerts and pops them up on your screen. Go
to control panel, administrative tools, services, and look for the messenger
thing on there and disable it.

Greetings --

When visiting porn sites, always be careful not to
download/install their "free" viewers. You'll get more than expected,
every time. To repair the current situation, uninstall the
"viewer(s)" provided and then use Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and
SpyBot Search and Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/ to clean up
any residue. Both have free versions for personal use.

You should also try using MSConfig to see if something is being
started each time you reboot.

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

Greetings --

Please stop posting potentially harmful, and, in this case,
completely irrelevant, advice.

Disabling the messenger service, as you advise, is a "head in the
sand" approach to computer security that leaves the PC vulnerable to
threats such as the W32.Blaster.Worm.

The real problem is _not_ the messenger service pop-ups; they're
actually providing a useful service by acting as a security alert. The
true problem is the unsecured computer, and you're only
advice, however well-intended, was to turn off the warnings. How is
this helpful?

Equivalent Scenario: You over-exert your shoulder at work or
play, causing bursitis. After weeks of annoying and sometimes
excruciating pain whenever you try to reach over your head, you go to
a doctor and say, while demonstrating the motion, "Doc, it hurts when
I do this." The doctor, being as helpful as you are, replies, "Well,
don't do that."

The only true way to secure the PC, short of disconnecting it from
the Internet, is to install and *properly* configure a firewall; just
installing one and letting it's default settings handle things is no
good. Unfortunately, this does require one to learn a little bit more
about using a computer than used to be necessary.

Hi,

Try downloading, installing and updating the
spyware removers from the links below. Run both of them.

Ad-aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Spybot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download

Download the utility CWshredder:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

Unzip - close *all* instances of IE & OE, hit the executable and
follow the prompts.

You can also download Hijack This from here:

http://www.mjc1.com/files/merijn/hijackthis.exe

Go here:
http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/

For instructions on how to use it; you have to post the log it
produces so experts tell you what is good and what is malware

If these don't correct the problem, then get yourself a copy of
BHODemon, available at
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm .

It does not need installing - simply unzip and run the EXE program. It
is easy to use. It will find the hijackware DLL files, and give you
the ability to disable them.

Hope this helps.
