Undo restore point failed

When I try to undo a restore point, a get an error message that the operation
has failed because of an unknown error. Then none of my other restore points
will work, either. Anybody know what goes on?

When doing a System Restore in Safe Mode it's probably best to create a
Restore Point just prior to performing the restore operation due to not
being able to "undo" the restore when performed in Safe Mode.

Hello t-4-2 an d Ramone,

Thank you, it worked in safe mode. I don't have any of the software listed
on the page that Ramone linked me to. Must be some other software conflict?
Am I right in thinking that it doesn't matter as long as I'm able to do a
restore in safe mode?

thanx again,
Chet

Tried to do restore in normal mode. No dice. Tried turning off virus scanner.
Still no dice. Can do restore only in safe mode. Have no idea what's wrong.

Right, I created a restore point and then tried to use that one to do the
system restore, which failed. Do not have sp1. Should I?

Hi, sorry for the delay. My System Properties window shows HP (C:) (System),
which is checked, and Recovery (D:), which is not. It doesn't say anything
about Local Disk. But it looks like the recovery is turned on.

Error message said "Restore failed because of an unknown error. Try using
another restore point." But the other restore points don't work, either.
Could they be corrupted somehow? I was originally trying to do a restore
because system seemed unusually slow, even for Vista, and I though an earlier
restore point might fix that. I dunno, maybe this is just one of those things
that has no simple solution.

I don't know what the problem is either and I have the same problem. I check
every now and then for solutions, but since I can't find one, I do the same
thing I suggested to Chet, which is to create a "System Restore Point"
(while logged in normally), then boot into "Safe Mode" and perform the
restore operation. It may not be the best way but at least the "System
Restore Point" that I make just prior can be used as an "undo".

Wow, I can't believe you spent so much time researching this. Thank you. I
can't recall for sure which restore point I picked, but I'm quite sure it was
one when the system was working OK, since that was my intention. I'm curious:
Why are you not convinced it's better to do a system restore in safe mode,
since that seems to work better, at least for me? Can you give me the url for
the "How-to Geek" site? I'd like to read that, too.

I tried to post this reply last night, but for some reason it didn't make
it. Anyway, I don't recall exactly what restore point I picked, but it had to
be one that would have been when the system was working well, because that
was my reason for doing it. By the way, can you give me the url for the
"How-to Geek" article? I'd like to read that.

And I can't believe you've put in so much time on this. Thank you

Once again, thank you for all your help and research. It actually was quite a
help. At least I know I'm not the only one with this little bug, if that's
what it is.

Best,
Chet
