System Restore ~ HELP!!!

I have Vista and my computer is less than a year old. I lost a program
somehow and went through the restore process so that I could retrieve it. I
was unable to retrieve it but in the restore process I lost a lot of other
stuff that I need to recover. So then I tried to undo the first restore only
to find that the restore points only go back to the date of the first
restore. So I chose that restore point but the system encountered an error
and the restore was not executed. Now the date of the first restore is gone
from the list and there are no dates preceeding that date.

I didn't do anything fancy like restore in safe mode or use the disk. I
just hit the command keys as directed in the instructions. I need to restore
my computer back to a date that is not on the list.

How do I do the restore when the instructions for doing so create an error?
I need to go back a month.

There are 3rd party programs that can recover lost files. This one is free:

AFAIK your only option for the lost program is to reinstall it.

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools> System Restore.
Disabale anti-virus when using it!
You can not go back prior to when you turned on System Restore.

When you go back to a point in time, any programs that you have installed
since that earlier date are GONE. You have to reinstall them from the Media,
or download them again.
Your Data(documents,photos, etc) and settings are kept(I would still make a
backup copy)

Thanks Mick. This is exactly what I did to try and get back to my original
1/14/08 restore date. It only shows 1/30 as the oldest restore date. Is
there anything else i can do to recover the date that was there but is no
longer there. I have never turned off the feature so it should not have
deleted the date.

Unfortunately, this program is unsupported by my system. I lost a host of
family pictures and other documents that I want to get back. Is it possible
to get them back thru the restore process? I do have disks for all of my
programs.

Another program is call "Restoration". you will haveto google for it.

Do not use that hard drive, or write anything to it; you will overwrite what
you have lost.
PCInspecrot is good, and undelete plus, 2nd.

It is difficult doing Data Recovery.
You should not install these programs on the hard drive that you are working
on; You overwrite files!
The perfect way to do it is to make your hard drive a slave drive in another
computer, where the recovery program is installed.
Then get the recovery program to scan your drive..

If too complicated, install undelete plus on yours(it is only a small
program), run it and see what you can recover.

Unfortunately, I don't think system restore will help.
The best bet is a third party data recovery tool, but if you've been
using the system and accessing the drive, it's possible you've already
corrupted the data.

On the otherhand if the pictures are in a separate partition or drive
and the system hasn't written to it, a third party tool stands a
very good chance of success.

If your drive is in the first scenario mentioned above and you're
serious about a recovery, you need to stop booting from it
immediately. Get the drive out of the PC and access it as a
non-boot drive on a 2nd PC.

The best place for specific recovery help would be the group
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage

You cannot restore back a month. You'll need to purchase a 3rd party
undelete program. The sooner you stop using your PC the better your chance
will be of recovering the lost files.

Why the heck didn't you have backups?!

don't you have them backed up?

Not going to help with your immediate problem, but M$ restore blows,
always has. I'd get a product from Acronis, so this doesn't happen
again.
