Understanding .pst files?

Using Windows XP and Outlook 2002

I have several custom folders to organize email.
I have a couple of Archive .pst files as well.

I want to backup all of my emails to an external hard drive.

In addition to the email in my Inbox...

QUESTION # 1
....Does my main Outlook.pst file also contain the emails in all if my
CUSTOM folders?

QUESTION # 2
....Does my Outlook.pst file contain the emails in my ARCHIVE folders?

QUESTION # 3
....Does my Outlook.pst file contain the emails in my SENT folders?

If you mean by "custom folders" folders that you have created, then yes.

No - they will be in a separate pst file commonly called archive.pst and
archive1.pst....

So if I back up my Outlook.pst file, and my Archive.pst file, all of
my emails will be backed up, including those in the folders I created
in Outlook. What that means is that I only have to back up two pst
files to have all of my emails backed up. Is that correct?

Yes
(You only need to copy them (with Outlook closed) to create a backup, or you
could use the free MS Backup addin)
