Understanding Discussion Web FP 2003

After creating a basic site with the template wizard, I realised that I could not follow / understand the flow (tree structure) from a "Comment" up to the "Discussion Title". I spent hours in vain trying to find a description or article - ie something like "About the Discussion Web Site Template". I spent 3-4 hours on the phone with MS NSW Australia, who were also apparently not able to find anything or anyone who knew the answers!!
I find it difficult to understand why MS would create a web template, then not provide any description or article about it. Does anyone know of an article or description please? Or, if not, would someone explain the bits to me please. Things like - what is "Category"; why does it display as a combo; where and how does it fit into the heirarchical tree ...etc? If necessary i am willing to pay a modest fee. Thank you in anticipation.

David,

I do understand your frustration with fp, however, I was able to get around by creating or openning an entire web site template, not only a page, and modifying each one of the pages to my liking. If the template contains too many pages, remove the excess - all of this is done on the left pane of the screen. Once all the pages are modified as per your requirements, close all pages on the righ hand pane of the screen (web site pane) to the point that both halves of the screen are showing the same information (folder list); at that junction you will see at the bottom of the right hand side of the screen tabs for : folders, remote web site, reports, navigation, hyperlinks, tasks. Click the navigation tab! Does this help?

Good luck,

Dear RonX
Thank you very much for the 'test'. I have tried a few options on it and will continue, if you are able to leave it there for a short while. Main things at this stage are - if "Category" can't display in the TOC it's value is diminished and therefore, is it possible to change or edit the fields which currently do display in the TOC?

Thanks again, much appreciated

I'll leave the pages there for as long as they are used.

I do not use the discussion web, but the options are normally restricted to
those available in the properties dialogues. Your question is worth
investigating further, however.

You need to add the Category in the disc1_post.htm form (form properties options) under Table of Contents form fields as say:
Category Subject From Date
(s-toc-fields="Category Subject From Date" in the code view)
for them to appear in the TOC

Thanks for that, Stefan.
I have updated the web (at www.rxs-enterprises.org/tests/discussion/ ) and
the "help" that goes with it, but found that Subject has to first in the
list of fields in the TOC, otherwise the auto-fill of the subject field
when replying to posts does not work.

Yes - see Stefan's reply in this thread, and I have updated the test
discussion web.

The order of the fields just dictates the TOC line string in contents
- agree if you don't use the subject first, the user must remember the subject and category since neither are passed, but the thread
will still be valid no matter what they chose since it is all done by msg #

Created a discussion group (first time effort) linked to existing active
website but intended for certain group of readers, but when published it, it
published over the existing website so that it no longer comes up at all.
Intended discussion group to only be a link.

You need to create the discussion web as a subweb / subsite under your root (main) web.
