How to modify discussion group pages

FP 2003.

Trying to include the FP web template for discussion groups. I cannot use
search. The hoster has some problems with indexing. So I want to do at least
two things. How do I edit the menu items to remove the 'search' hyperlink,
and how do I edit the 'home' hyperlink which currently points to index.htm
(which does not exist)? Second I would like the ability to thread the
discussion if that is not included in the default template.

Where can I find documentation on the template? My hosting server has a
plethora of capabilities including IIS admin, ASP.net versions, and others.
Not sure what Windows Sharepoint Services are and how they are distinguished
from Microsoft Sharepoint Team Services, or their relationship to IIS or
ASP.

I can't seem to find an online roadmap negotiating these technologies. They
are, as technologies go, fairly sophisticated and the documentation while
explaining the individual technology does not offer it's relationships to
other technologies. Using the right tools for the job is important. I am
attempting to do common tasks like providing visitors interactive content (a
discussion page, feedback page, polls, and the like). I really didn't want
to go outside the Microsoft environment while parsing the site together like
using PHP or CGI. At that point I might as well run my own Apache web
server.

The server I am on is owned by ASPNIX.com which advertises being a Microsoft
partner. So any help would be appreciated. I have been going round and round
with them about seemingly simple items, so maybe I am using the wrong
approach to building an interactive website.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

BTW, I found Tina Clark's FP 2002 info on discussion webs at
http://accessfp.net/frontpagediscussionweb2002.htm Thanks to her for that. Not sure if the info is
still good for 2003 or if there is a newer way to do things.

Thanks Thomas:

BTW I finally found out why my hosting service does not allow me to have a
search component. Actually, they turned it on for a few days, and then
turned it off again. The Microsoft Index Server turns out to be a premium on
some web hosting services. My last hosting service ran it, but it was not
advertised as part of the package. It was just there for me. So when my
current host didn't provide it I didn't know why they were balking on it,
and neither did their support people.
