Restore Pages to a Discussion Web?

Is it possible to restore pages to a discussion web where tocproto.htm has been over written? My file got overwritten automatically when I tried to sync up the site and now none of my former discussions are appearing on my page. I've tried recalculating the hyperlinks from within frontpage and I've tried recalculating the hyperlinks from the server side (sharepoint services). Is there anyway to restore the former contents? I still have all the .htm files, I just need tocproto.htm to index them.

No, at least that I am aware of. For this reason, it is best to always
create the discussion web as separate subweb, if your host allows subwebs.

I am my own host. What advantage would there be to having my discussion web be a subweb?

The advantage is that when you update the main content of your web site
locally, any subweb content would not be updated unless, you select to
include subwebs during the publishing operation.
