UNDERSCORE "_" files: Win2K SP4 - "Setup cannot copy the file xxx" ?

I have a Dell Latitude C600 and keep having errors when trying to
apply SP4. I've tried it from CDROM, copied it to local HD, and over
the web via MS's site and I keep getting errors.

Basically somewhere in the install I get an error like the one I just
now encountered (files vary...):

"Setup cannot copy the file win32k.sys"

The file win32k.sy_ is plainly in the SP4 install directory
\i386\uniproc but hitting RETRY in the error window will do no good.
It says it doesn't exist. Is there some way I can tell it to manuall
unzip or unpack or uncompress or whatever the file???

I even tried to copy WIN32K.SYS from another system (w/ SP4 installed)
to the Win2K SP4 install dir on this PC under the uniproc directory
the installer is looking in. Even the expanded version w/o the
underscore - it says isn't there and I'm still faced w/ the
retry/cancel option.

I told it to try the file that was up on dir under i386. It liked that
file better and away we went.

Next up comui.dl_ - again it said this one couldn't be found yet there
it was plain as day in the i386 dir the install app said it wasn't. So
I copied this to a 'TEMP' dir and told it to look there. It seemed to
like it better after I copied it.

Each time I try to apply SP4 to this PC I get similar errors w/
different files. Ideas? Work-arounds?

Try applying from a safe mode start.
