looking at the glass in my scanner the "underneath" of the glass
plate, looks like to have rub marks & streaks on it, also the glass
seem sto have bluish streaks.. kind of like what oil looks like when
dropped in water. IS there any way to clean this? what is it caused by?
doing a large pixel scan of something does show up like a faint
blue/purple smear over a part of it.
the scanner is about a year old ( visioneer) so it is out of
warrenty, so I figure if I screw it up by opening it, I won't be out
anythign more, if I have to buy a new one anyway...... so is there a
way to attempt to clean this? or can I? (apart from trying to figure
out how to open this.

Get your screwdriver out and get the top off! I've often seen some
sort of "condensation" on the underside. I've even seen cases before
where the whole of the underside was covered with a very fine coating
of very fine black dust, not even perceptible to the naked eye but
betrayed itself via a gradual deterioration in image fidelity. Whether
it had been produced gradually from friction in the transport
mechanism, or drawn in from atmosphere, I have no idea. Such stuff is
eminently cleanable, with soft kitchen paper and spray glass cleaner.
Just make sure you unplug your scanner from mains and PC first, and do
the cleaning well away from the exposed electronics, obviously ... and
make sure the glass is properly dry before you replace it.

"spray glass cleaner"

NEVER, under any circumstances.

Even the standard alcohol that contains lanolin and is not 100% pure should
never be used.

All these leave an oil stains on the glass.

You wouldn't use such thing to clean your camera lens!
Why is your scanner glass any different.

There are very extensive threads on cleaning scanner glasses in the
archives.

You are most likely seeing the result of the outgassing from the plastic
parts used in the construction of your scanner. Disassemble and clean :)

Be careful with using regular paper towels because they will unleash
massive clouds of dust which will be impossible to remove from the
scanner innards afterwards. You may make matters much worse!

I'd vacuum the room first, let the dust settle for a while and only
then open the scanner. You might even leave the vacuum cleaner on next
to the scanner to "distract" any floating dust.

BTW, the screws aren't always easy to find and on my scanner were
hiding underneath round rubber plugs.

Initially, I used lens cleaner solution and lens paper to clean the
underside but the best is just wiping the glass clean with a dry
microfiber cloth. Best done in a darkened room and with the scanner
light on. Looking at the glass at a very shallow angle, almost
parallel to the scanner, is the best way to spot dirt.

The streaks, BTW, are possibly the ribbon cable rubbing against the
glass. Because of that I clean the underside weekly during heavy use.
The rest is condensed evaporation from electronic components.

Finally, to make sure you did a good job, perform a scan of the full
area with the lid up and in a darkened room. In other words, scan
nothing. This will produce a "black" image but if you load it into an
editor and boost the brightness you'll be able to see all the dirt and
scratches on the glass.

Be prepared to shriek with horror! ;o)

Don.
