Can anyone suggest a free, or at least, free to try with full functinality
for so many days, undelete utility for windows?

Do not use the PC more than absolutely nescessary
so that deleted files are not overwritten

So, on another PC, download

Put the program on a floppy, and run the program from there:

Restoration
Restore files which are deleted from the recycle bin by mistake.
[OS] Windows 95 Windows 98 Windows Me Windows NT Windows 2000
Windows XP
Freeware

Another vote for Restoration.

I used this utility to restore pictures I had deleted on a memory stick.
It has a very simple interface but is *extremely* useful. Often times
you cannot recover the full remains of some files if you have written to
the drive after you have deleted the files. Recovering on a harddrive
is probably much different then on a portable media because it has more
empty room to write too.
