How do I un-delete messages which I stupidly deleted with Shift-Del?

If deleted item retention was enabled on the mail store (as is recommended),
and you're within the timeframe, use tools | recover deleted items.
If not, you'd have to ask your Exchange admin to restore Windows & Exchange
Server from backup to a spare/recovery server, export your mailbox to PST,
and then copy that message to your mailbox. He or she may mumble very
unpleasant things about you at this point, so I do recommend avoiding it.
It's a very good idea to enable deleted item retention - I do 30 days,
usually.

Oops. The use the Recall Deleted Message menu item. This depends on
the Exchange server being configured to enable this feature and you
attempting to undelete within the configured retention time. See
Lanwench's reply.

Understood. It's a good idea to keep your IT people happy and well-fed, and
don't poke them with sharp sticks as it may enrage them. If you don't have
DIR enabled, ask them to do so pronto, though, as it will save them a lot of
work. And they may like that idea a lot. Enable it on the public store as
well.

Shift + Delete bypasses both the deleted items folder and Exchange Recover
Deleted Items option. It is permanently deleted. Period.

Wrong. For a PST message store, Shift+Del simply changes the status of
the item in the database to "Deleted". Outlook will not show
delete-marked items. Items in the Deleted Items folder are NOT
delete-marked but have simply been moved to a different folder.
Delete-marked items physically remain within the message store.
Deleting tons of e-mails will NOT make your message store smaller. You
remove them physically from the message store by purging the database of
the delete-marked items (i.e., you compact it).
You might feel comfy in thinking that you permanently deleted a message
from your Exchange mailbox so no one could no longer see it but your
company has a copy of EVERY message you ever sent and received. You can
ask in an Exchange group for clarification but I'm pretty sure that
anything that goes through Exchange can be logged or otherwise recorded
regardless of how you personally manage the displaybe items within your
mailbox. Obviously anything you [permanently] delete AFTER the admin
has saved a backup isn't going to delete the message from the backup.
Since Exchange also uses databases for its message store then it
probably follows the same SQL-like behaviors as when using the local PST
message store; i.e., changing the status of an item to "Deleted" by
[permanently] deleting it doesn't really remove it from the database
until a purge operation is performed (compaction).

Many thanks, Lanwench, Vanguard, Milly and others. As it turned out, we
were able to recover all messages that I stupidly deleted, thanks to the
user himself having made a backup. <Phew!> That saved me tons of
embarrassment.
