UNC File copy MUCH FASTER than mapped UNC drive copy?

Any idea why a file copy from a WindowsXP/2000 client machine would exibit
any difference between a mapped drive using UNC and a straight UNC file
copy? It appears that if I map a drive using a UNC [M:\share (which is
\\server\share)] it is MUCH SLOWER than if I just copy these files to
\\server\share ? These are small files. I even notice a big difference in
Office File saves and background saves using a drive letter as opposed to a
UNC. I have set all my Office users to use UNC file save location
