Unbelievably slow access

After clearing several viruses I no longer have ALL PROGRAMS listed. I
reinstalled XP Pro which didn't bring it back. I right click on the C drive
icon on the desktop to view the contents. All programs are working but I miss
the quick
access to the contents of the drive.

The reinstall automatically brought up all the necessary patches which were
deleted at the installation.
Also after reinstalling XP Pro my system is unbelievably slow.
I have cleared the cache and all temp files.
I have done a defrag and scanned for errors.
From theWindows splash screen to the desktop takes almost 2 minutes while
before the virus problem it took only a few seconds. And it takes over a
minute for it
to shut down.
Can anything be done to speed it up?

Sometimes, when all else fails, especially after being infected with
"several viruses," and a Repair Install fails to correct the problems,
you're left with one alternative: format the drive and do a clean install of
Windows XP and your software. Before doing that copy any data files that
you wouldn't want to lose to removable media. After the clean install of
Windows XP, immediately activate the firewall, install a good antivirus
program, update the virus definitions, get a decent firewall, and practice
safe computing (don't open unsolicited email, don't open file attachments
unless you know exactly what they are, don't give your email address to any
one who doesn't practice safe computing, get a free hotmail address and give
that address to those people. Also use the hotmail address when registering
software, or when you furnish your email address at a web site.) Before
copying saved files back to your clean Windows XP install, scan them for
viruses.
