"Unavailable" icon keeps popping up all the time

My mother just got a new laptop with XP home. For some
reason that I can't determine, the "unavailable" icon
(i.e., the circle with a diagonal line through it) keeps
popping up all the time. Does anyone know why this would
be and, more importantly, how I can stop it. I've had XP
computers for a long time and virtually never seen this
icon.
