Unable to write to a cd-rw

G

Guest

I can't burn any files to my cd-rw.

I get a CD WRITIN WIZARD window that states: " INSERT A WRITABLE DISC TO
CONTINUE" As far as I know its not write protected and its not full, its
empty, its new.

I also get a window that states: WINDOW DOES NOT SUPPORT CD-R FORMAT.

I can play music from this cd rw drive and I upgraded the firmware of the
cd-rw from the manufacturer.

Should it be this hard?

What other info is needed other than:
OS WIN XP PRO

I ran into this problem last night when I wanted to add 1 photo to a CD that
already contained some photo's. I had tried to drag and drop the file onto
the CD but when I used the "Write these files to CD" option from Explorer I
got the same message; "WINDOWS DOES NOT SUPPORT CD-R FORMAT".

I then brought up Sonic's "RecordNow" and was able to write to the CD just
fine. I have no idea as to WHY it behaved that way but would be curiuos to
find out.

Probably the Sonic software took over XP.
Open My Computer and right click on your CD drive listed there. Click on
Properties and on the Recording tab.
Is there a check in the box "Enable....". If not place one in and try XP
again.

That enable check box was already "checked"
I downloaded some roxio s'ware, was able to copy one file to it, but now
when I try to add more, it says I have to have a blank cd.

Question: can you only write to a CD R once, even if it shows that its
almost empty

When you open a photo folder and select photos to copy, you should then see
"Copy items to CD" under Picture Tasks. If you use this, XP will let you use
a blank CD or a CD with photos on it so you can add to it. However, to add
to it, the CD must have been made with XP, not Roxio. You cannot mix the
two.

Below are the steps to copy to CD using XP and some problems and solutions.
I know this is annoying. We get this problem posted here and as far as I
know there is no "real" solution to it. We just try different ways to get XP
back.

Mr Yves,

Are you saying that once I've written some to a CD that is not XP, but say
Roxio in this case, that CD is then useless to use as XP.

I tried to do what you said, I did select some files, selected copy, went to
the CD drive, File>>Write these files to CD, I then get a CD writing Wizard
that states:
Insert a writable disc to continue
The disk in the drive is not a writable CD or its full
Please insert a blank, writable CD in to drive E:\ or insert one with enough
space.

What makes this "not writable"? this disk and three others clearly have
enough space.

Yes. If you start with XP, you must stay with XP.
If you start with Roxio, you must stay with Roxio.
The problem, as I see now, with so many complaints about this, is that when
you click on Copy to CD, you have no idea if XP will do it or Roxio will do
it. Everything is hidden unless XP takes over and you see the message "You
have files waiting...". The only way to get back to knowing if XP is going
to do it is to uninstalled Roxio and install it again when you need it. A
real pain but no other solution has been offered to absolutely make sure
that you can use XP without fault and interference from Roxio.
If you want to use Roxio, open it rather than Copy to CD and when you open
Roxio, select Copy data files. You then have the option in Roxio to add to
this CD, if made by originally by Roxio.

I found this link at a different MS site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300779/

SYMPTOMS
The process of copying large amounts of data to the CD-ROM temporary files
area may take several minutes. During this time, the option to Write To CD is
available and can be clicked. However, if you click this option, the CD copy
operation may not succeed and may create an unusable disc.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the files are still in the process of being
copied and therefore do not yet exist in the temporary files location.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, do not click the Write To CD option while files
are being copied to the temporary files area.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products
that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Mr Yves,

I wonder if this is what is going on, my disks are being rendered useless?

Yes, this can happen. However, I don't think this the problem you are
facing. Normally, we wait until the CD is copied and ejected before we start
to copy another one.

I'm having the similiar problem, unable to write data to CD-R in XP home
pack2.
The image is generated and put into temp area in drive C, CD write wizard
shows everything is ok: data is written to CD, CD is ejected after the copy.
However, when view the CD to verify, nothing on it, it's still blank. Tried
a couple of times with Memorex CD-R(700MB, 52x muilt speed) at 8x when
disabling screen saver and anti-viruses SW, all the same problem. No idea
what's wrong.

Tao.
