when i try to copy to the cd I cannot get past the wizard, because it keeps telling me to put in a disc. I have tried several discs - both cd-r and cd-rw, and I do have a drive that is dvd-rw/ cd-rw.

seconds for XP to recognize that a CD-R has been inserted. A window may
open, with a variety of options in it or no option in it. You don't need any
of the options in this window to copy to a CD-R. There is a Cancel button at
the bottom of this window. Click on it to close this window or click on the
red X square at the top right. If this window does not open, this is fine
just go to step 2.

I have the same response when I try to save my pictures
to a CD
"there is no disc in the drive. Please insert a writable
CD".
I have a CD in. I have read the articles you referred
Norm to and I went to "My Computer" and then to "Devices
with removable storage", "CD-RW Drive E","Properties and
Recordings".
Enable CD recording on this drive has a check mark.
Help!
What else can I try?
How do we get to AutoRun to try this fix?[email protected] said:I had the same problem. No matter what I tried, the wizard would not
recognize that a CD was in the drive, even though my regular burning
software worked just fine.
After much messing around I found the problem, at least in my case.
I had disabled the "AutoRun" feature and this was apparently preventing
the wizard from working properly. Just to test, I toggled it back off
again and the problem came back.
Now there are several ways to manage the "AutoRun" setting and I'm not
sure that all of them would have this effect. In my case I was using a
registry entry as follows:
The key is:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom
The value is Autorun
The data is a REG_DWORD set to 0 (zero)
I set it to 1, rebooted the PC and all is well.
Check http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-018 for some other
possible methods of maintaining AutoRun....
