Unable to view some thumbnails on internet

I recently bought a computer with windows XP multimedia
edition. When visiting some websites, I am unable to view
thumbnails. Instead there is a small white box with a
red "x" in it. I downloaded JAVA and this helped with
some sites but not all. My regular windows XP ( on my
work computer) never had this problem. Do I need to ADD
software or is one of my anti virus/ internet security
softwares doing too much? Thanks for any help!
