A Gregory

I use OE6. When I try to download the list of available newsgroups I get the
following error message

"502 You have no permission to talk {62.137.152.153}, Goodbye

Configuration:
Account: news.breathe.com
Server: news.breathe.com
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119
Secure(SSL): 0
Error Number: 502
Code: 800ccca0"

I have tried this with several ISPs and get a similar message from all of
them. However, I am able to use this newsgroup in OE when I add it via the
"open with newsreader" option from the Microsoft support site.

This problem only began after the installation of WinXP SP2.

Can anyone advise?

TIA

A.

Hi,

Sounds like that newsserver (breathe.com) requires a logon and password. It
may be private or a subscriber-based service. The MS public newsserver does
not require either of those, and so allows you to download the list. You
would have to ask the purveyors of that news outlet.

Thanks for you time Rick.

I've already contacted breath and they say no logon etc should be required.

I'm wondering if its some kind of security setting in OE or even WinXP since
all was well before installing the SP2 pack.

Hi,

No, SP2 does nothing to prevent you from downloading a newsgroup list. It
adds some functions to OE, but the error message you are seeing is being
generated by their newsserver, not OE.

Hi A.,

Are you trying to access the server through another ISP? A lot of ISPs
look for you to have one of their IPs. It is security thing so that
only subscribers are allowed to access their news server. I have an
independent news server that I use that requires a user name &
password to authenticate that I can use anywhere.
