unable to view folder error on public folder - business critical!

John

I would appreciate any help with this problem, as the it is occuring to our
general manager who cannot access our members details that we (perhaps
erronously) store in public folders.

We are not sure what he did, but whenever he highlights one of our public
folders so that he can see the contacts in that folder he has the "unable to
view folder". We have tried various permissions and rebooting the exchange
server.

One of my colleagues thinks it is a "locked file", and the culprit said that
he was trying to select one of his personal custom views. Another fact that
might be useful to know is that it is a new PC he has just started using,
but that when we log on to another machine as him we encounter the same
problem.

Also, anyone else can access the specific public folder with no problems.

We are running exchange 2000.

Help!!!!

This is the wrong newsgroup for this question. It's an exchange problem,
not an outlook problem. But, I'm willing to bet the issue involves
permissions.

The quick and dirty answer is to give him a new account with appropriate
access rights while you figure out what's wrong with his permissions. If
you're using a shared public folder, it shouldn't matter who he is (meaning
there shouldn't be any "it's MY personal file" issues).
]
Another solution might be to just give him administrator rights until you
can figure out the problem and tone it down. Then again, if he CAUSED this,
maybe giving him admin rights isn't such a smart move.

most likely it's a corrupt view. you could try the cleanviews switch on his
machine, but it will delete any custom views he has. You can also use mdbvue
or outlook spy to remove the views from that folder.

Would this really be an option if the problem travels with the PERSON from
PC to PC, using ones that presumably work for other people, no matter what
PC he's using?

If the problem moves with him, wouldn't it have to be an Exchange
permissions/profile problem?

views are stored in the mailbox or pst, so it affects him when he logs in
from anywhere.

AHA! So in an Exchange environment, views are stored in .pst files on the
server, not the individual PC. See, I thought the files were stored on a
public server but downloaded to private folders when the user logged in.
Then the views applicable to the PC itself (and its .pst file) took control.

Just curious now, but if Exchange Server is down but the user has private
folders with information, I'm assuming he's SOL if he wants to use a view
that only exists in the public folders on the server. In fact, it would
suggest that would be the case even if the Server were working (unless he
synchronized the views). Right?

Not exactly. You can configure your mail profile either way: so that
messages are delivered to the Inbox on the Exchange server or so that
messages are delivered to the Inbox of your Personal Folders file. The
Inbox, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Journal, and Tasks are active for wherever
Exchange's default mail delivery location is set. If to the server, then
the server folders are active. If to the PST file, then those are actuve.
