Unable to use the internet

G

Geoff

Have Win XP SP2 and a dial up connection. When I have made my connection to
the internet neither my IE nor OE allow any further "connection". Web pages
will not open and OE does not send or receive email (I have checked the
server connections with the provider and they all seem to be in order).
Neither can I update my AVG antivirus, nor update Ad-Aware or SpyBot Search
& Destroy. I have turned off the windows firewall and this makes no
difference at all.
Open to any help on this one! Thanks

The post shows that you can in fact use the internet.
The first thing to try is to ditch the dial up connection. Those web pages
that you are trying to access take forever to load via dial up.

Yeah, thanks Jim, but it is another computer - not this one. I know this one
works :)

Are you using zone alarm too? If you are turn the xp firewall on and close
zone alarm and try it.

Hi,
If you aren't running another firewall, re-enable the Windows Firewall.
WindowsXP *really* needs to have a firewall running.

Then...
Log on as an administrator.
From Start> Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:
netsh Winsock reset

If a winsock reset worked, look for the malware that damaged it.
You will want to run Ad-aware, Spybot and (if running WinXP) MS
Anti-Spyware (Beta.)
