Curious internet connection

G

Geoff

Using Win XP Pro SP2 and DSL modem connection.
After a period of time of not browsing the internet or using the email
program (OE6), despite being connected to the internet I cannot get my email
program to download send nor can I get my browser to open a new site. If I
reboot the computer then both my browser and email program again work ok
(for a short while). Have run Ad-Aware, Spybot and my antivirus program and
there appears to be no problems shown by them. Sure would appreciate any
help - thanks.

Thanks for that RoadRunner - never knew that that option was available. Had
the modem now for about six months and this "problem" has only arisen during
the last few weeks. I now wonder what triggered this "problem". The "Power
Save" feature is now turned off.

Damn....."cure" did not work. I am still losing my ability to use my email

Can you see whether you have DNS Client service on automatic or manual and
whether it started too ?

Services Editor
Start / Run (type) "services.msc" (no quotes)
Scroll down to "DNS Client", Right-click and select: Properties
Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"
Select: Manual, click Apply - Ok and restart your computer
You can see that the DNS Service is not needed by opening the Services
Editor again after a while, scroll down to the DNS Client entry and check
the "Status" column. It should remain blank, if the service was needed, it
would show "Started" in that column. If wanted, you can safely set it to
Disabled instead of Manual

See if that helps ...

I have changed the DNS Client to Manual and after six hours of being online
I note that the Status column has remained blank. Perhaps my "problem" has
now been solved. Thanks RoadRunner.
