connection to the internet

I'm trying to set up internet connection. when i get to the window that ask
how do you want to connect to the internet. I select sey up my own
connection manually, because that's what my internet carrier wants me to
choose. When i go to the next window im asked to select connect using a dial
up modem, connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and
password that's what im told to select but i cant because its highlighted and
doesnt give me the option to select it. so i cant go any further to set up
connection. Please help

Is this a DSL or cable connection? It's likely a DSL if you're asked for
a username and password.

If the broadband option is greyed out, check in Device Manager to see if
the network adapter is present and functioning.

At a command prompt (start, run, CMD) type "ipconfig" and press enter. You
should get some sort of report of IP addresses.
