Was given a used computer, Dell Deminsion XPS T, that was set up for a home
network. I am trying to install software for my cable internet service. The
software is not allowing me to continue with set up until I uninstall all
other adapters. Whenever I try to through the device manager I get a
message " Failed to uninstall. May be required to boot computer". I've set
the Wake On Lan to off but still get the same message..Any sugestions?????

Hi
May be you want to be specific about what are the exact devices that need to
be Uninstalled.
In most cases there is No need to install any specific software when using
Internet cable, if the computer is already network ready.
Manual configuration of the existing network should be enough.

I need to load software for RoadRunner Cable Intrernet. I get to a point
when loading the softare where I get the message " A faulty or non-fuctional
adapter has been found. Please remove the following: Then it lists a Linksey
wireless USB network adapter and a ADMtek erthernet adapter both of which are
listed in the device manager. ( Both of which are hidden files and have "
Packet Scheduler Miniport" after the name, something I'm not familar with.) I
use a Toshiba modem on my current PC. This may be something Road Runner will
need to assist me on but I thought I'd go to the real pros first !!!!!

From what I can recall (I can't find the old threads), this problem is
close to intractable. I've seen various suggestions, including
disabling Wake-on-LAN (as you've done), disabling PXE boot (boot from a
network device) in the BIOS, and others I can't now recall. None of
those seemingly sensible suggestions work.

When it happened to me, I was only able to recover by going to a System
Restore point prior to the problem occurring (or maybe it was a Ghost
image, I can't recall).

You can try "Manually Removing Network Adapter Entries from the Registry"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/147797/EN-US/
but that KB article is not guaranteed to work for XP.

However, given that this is a used computer that you obtained from
someone else, I'd _strongly suggest_ that you do a clean re-install of
Windows. You don't know what's on that hard disk. This adapter issue
may be only the tip of the iceberg.
