unable to transfer from video camera to computer

i've installed given driver and software, have borrowed a friends cord in
case that was the problem but xp still wont recognise the camera. any ideas??
camera is a HandStar HS-DV330A and while I don't expect miracles from such a
small device, I' like to be able to save the footage of my baby's early
months before I write it off as a bad buy.
 
Are you connecting this digital camcorder to the PC with a firewire (aka
IEEE1394, aka iLink) cable?
