Unable to startup XP

C

Chandra Sekhar

I made a mistake by running SYS C:\ from a windows ME startup disk on my
computer which was a dual boot (ME & XP).

Now I dont have my OS options screen anymore. I am unable to get to XP by
anymeans. Everytime I switch on my machine, it by default gets into ME. Any
change in boot.ini file has no effect!

I want to get back my XP. Could you please help.

Thanks in advance.

Sekhar.

Hi Sekhar,

Oops - you shouldn't have done that.....you overwrote the XP bootloader with
9x code, boot.ini is not longer being used to load the system.

Boot the WinXP CD, load the Recovery Console. From the command prompt, run
fixboot, followed by bootcfg /rebuild.

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead
of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password
requested is blank, and TAB over.
Use the commands
Fixboot
FixMbr

(the second should not be needed, but take a moment, in case)

Bootcfg should not be needed - the SYS C: will not have touched
boot.ini - and might give complications like having two instances of the
system in the menu
