Unable to start "HP Director" psc 1315xi printer/scanner software

I've just installed an HP 1315xi on my laptop running Windows XP Professional.

When I try to start HP Director, I get the following Windows error message:
"HP Director application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience."

I've read through the HP.com website support/troubleshooting/forum pages,
and used Google to find a number of other references to this problem. I've
tried every "fix" I could find, but with no success. Each time I'm asked to
send Microsoft an error report, I click "Yes," so the servers should have
ample documentation of the problem.

I'll paste the accompanying Error Signature below. I'd appreciate any
suggestions.

What does HP say about this? Do you have the latest version of HP Director
and the rest of the software for the 1315xi?
