Unable to share folders w/ Outlook and Exchange between users

N

Nicolas Macarez

Hi!

I have a Win2K3 SErver with Exchange 2K3 SP2 installed, and a few users set
up with their mailbox created.

One user needs to have full access to the mails of her boss.

I did give her the rights in the AD Users & Computers (User Properties, tab
Exchange Advanced, Mailbox Rights button, and so on).

Within the Outlook 2003 client of the boss, I gave the assistant the status
of delegate (Tools, Options, tab Delegate), and I gave her the full rights
on the Mailbox of her boss.

When I open her Outlook 2003 client, and try to open the Mailbox of the
boss, by doing File, Open, Folder of another user..., and then choosing the
right user, and the Mailbox Folder, I get this error:

Unable to display the folder, cannot open the mailbox for this user because
the user does not have a server mailbox.

Looking in the Microsoft KB, I found the KB 813603
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813603/en-us

which states that the two users are not belonging to the same Microsoft
Exchange Server organization, which is not the case at all (plain vanilla
Exchange 2K3 configuration with only organization and 30 users).

Any idea?

Help greatly appréciated.

Undo that. It isn't necessary if you've already assigned her 'full mailbox'
access in ADUC as you've stated above.

because the user does not have a server mailbox.

Fix the above, and then try again....I'm wondering if something has gone
funky since you applied these settings in two places. Also, when you try to
open the other mailbox, enter the boss' mailbox alias for the mailbox name.
Also, if you're using cached mode, make sure she's downloading the offline
address book and has the correct settings in there...

Many thanks !

I got around the issue by doing two things:

1. Undoing the delegate access thing in the Outlook of the boss, as you told
me.
2. In the Outlook client of the assistant, when I choose File, Open, Folder
of another user..., and then go for choosing the user, I entered "manually"
the e-mail address of the boss (and not browsing in the list).

It worked!

Glad it's working. You might see whether you have this problem with any
other users, tho, as you ought to be able to pick the mailbox from the GAL.

In fact, I picked up the wrong address (I picked the addres in the Contact
list of the user, in Outlook).
This explain now the message of Microsoft about e-mail addresses "not
belonging to the same Exchange Organization".

However, I still think you have to set up something in the "Boss" Outlook
client, in the Delegate options. Otherwise the Assistant can only read the
messages of the Boss: she won't be able to reply to the messages he
received, nor send messages in his name.

Am I wrong?

Best regards

Well - sorta. Email addresses in contacts don't exist in AD/Exchange at all.

No, you can set up "Send As" or "Send on Behalf Of" rights in ADUC as well.
That right isn't granted along with full mailbox access.
Am I wrong?

That's one option. "Send As" is another.
