Unable to set volume control

I have recently upgraded from Win98SE to Win2000
Professional. It is running on a Compaq Deskpro PC. When
I try to sewt the volume control nothing works. If I mute
the volume control I still get sound. Any ideas? Help!
 
My installation of W2K at work goes BSOD when I attempt to mute the
sound...

I would hazard a guess that the soundcard driver that got installed was
not the correct one. Try getting the correct one for Windows 2000 from
Compaq/HP and install that instead.
