Go to 'Tools|Accounts' click your email account, slick the "Properties"
button and go to the "Servers" tab. Do you have entries in the "email
username" and "password" boxes in the "Incoming Mail Server" section? The
error message indicates no entries in these boxes.

Dave,
I have the exact same problem .... I set up my laptop email exactly as my
isp provider suggested..... I have a pop3 account and incoming is
pop.west.cox.net and the outgoing is smtp.west.cox.net ... I put in my
username and password, but it won't let me send any mail .... I get the same
exact error code as the other person. What can I do?

Hard to say without seeing the complete error message.
Right-click on the error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without that complete error message.

Gary,
I'm sending from a laptop away from home. I read the link you sent, but it
doesn't give me any solutions. What can I do. The mail and servers are set up
on my laptop exactly as on my home computer.... it just doesn't work.

Any ideas of what to do? Thanks for you help.

You just identified the problem. You are not connecting to your ISP when you are away from home.
Therefore none of the settings work.

If you get a Gmail account, free from www.gmail.com, then setup Windows Mail to use the Gmail account (instructions available on the gmail page after you log-in to your account) then you can use Windows Mail for this account while connected to any ISP.

If you live in AZ, bring it to the Verde Valley Computer Club, in Cottonwood, on the 3rd Saturday of the Month (9:30 am) and I will fix it for you.

I included that link for background information, i.e., an explanation of
why you have that problem.

As a general rule, the owner of the SMTP server must be the same
as the provider of your Internet connection at that moment.

The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP. I don't think
Cox does. Cable companies are very bad about accommodating travelers.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently, substitute the SMTP
server belonging to that connection. This is a bit tricky, but if you want to go that route,
I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, and use it for your sending chores.
Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.
