I had Windows Mail set up and working just fine for past couple of weeks
until it began getting this same error (similar but with my outgoing servers)
last night at some point. I can still receive incoming email from the
associated servers but the usernames and passwords don't seem to be
recognized any more on the outgoing servers. I don't think I made any
changes.

I have these same email accts set up on another computer using Windows Live
mail and that still works for outgoing messages. I can also log onto the
webmail services and interact online to send and receive email on my accts.

I just recently tried to create a new e-mail address, and I am experiencing
the same problem with my outgoing server not working. As far as I can tell I
am using the correct server name, so I can not figure out what is the
problem. Have you found anything to correct the problem?

WM was working for me until around midnight last night. Not sure if there
was some update or something that changed settings - not me. I contacted my
ISP and they serve one of my email accts. They said all the settings are
correct and basically said it is a MS WM issue and gave me a number to call.
No time to follow that thread right now - 800-936-5700 for Microsoft if
someone else does.

I take it your Yahoo account is not a free one, but you have their premium
Mail Plus service? Try the following first:
Make sure you have send authentication enabled.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Servers.
The box for "My server requires authentication" must be checked.

If no improvement, you need to change your settings to agree with
these instructions:

Here is my current error message
The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's
e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'.

Server Response: 550 5.7.1 Authentication Required
Server: 'outgoing.verizon.net'

I tried changing the ports. Similar error messages on each of my outgoing
mail servers. It is like they are no longer recognizing the authentication
info from WLM.

The connection to the server has failed.

Subject 'Test 7Dec08'
Server: 'outgoing.verizon.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 465
Secure(SSL): No
Socket Error: 10060

The connection to the server has failed.

Subject 'Test 07Dec08 1516'
Server: 'relay.dnsexit.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 465
Secure(SSL): No
Socket Error: 10060

Thanks for the help.

Don't go changing the port number unless your provider or a competent
tech has specifically advised you to do so.

Make sure you have send authentication enabled.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Servers.
The box for "My server requires authentication" must be checked.
