unable to select user on welcome screen

When booting up, I get to the welcome screen and there are no icons/users to
click on in order to log on to windows. "Turn off your computer" still
appears in the lower left corner, but the only way to logon to windows is to
click ctrl+alt+del twice and enter that way.
Then when I click on "user accounts" in control panel, I am told that "the
current user account is not recognized. restart the computer and then open
user accounts". Rebooting and trying again receives the same results.

What expert mo meant to say was: Press Ctrl+Alt+Del
twice in succession at the logon screen, then enter your
normal logon account and password. You can now do
a System Restore.

Went back to 2 different known good restore points, the restore points do not
work, says restoration incomplete....

Also, not sure if this helps you at all, but
start.... run..... control userpasswords2
everything is blank, meaning the 2 user accounts are not showing up at all,
admin accounts are also missing.

HELP?!?!?!?
