unable to see ads and get "page cannot be displayed" at places

I had dial up where everything was fine.

then i had dsl for a week with att. hated it because of this problem and the
fact that att gives the worst customer service. but now i switched to
comcast cable internet and still have the same problem.

I can connect and surf fine. but occasionally the Yahoo logo will be just
displayed as typed words in a box, ads on yahoo.com will just be an empty
box, and I will get 'page cannot be displayed" on periodic pages only about
an inch or two high not the whole page. they've done ping tests-all data
comes thru.

any ideas. could it be some software I have on my comptuter. I uninstalled
ie spyad and it still does it. I don't think that could be it anyway because
I had that with dial up. I even turnedoff my firewall. could it be sp2. I
don't think so because my mom has sp2 and she has no problems. she gets all
data

Hi,
Since only some content is being blocked, check your HOSTS file. In XP-Home:
Make sure that Windows is showing hidden files and is not hiding file
extensions for known file types then check for a HOSTS file at
[C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc] Open the HOSTS file with notepad. If there
are any redirect entries in it you can put the pound sign and a space (# )
in front an entry to disable that redirect. Then click on File> Save. Or you
can rename the HOSTS file to (ie) HOSTS.OLD

More on the HOSTS file at http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/
and http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Or...
A legitimate program running in the background may be causing this. Disable
(for diagnostic purposes) programs such as pop-up blockers,
security/privacy, anti-virus, etc. You may have to reinstall, or remove and
not reinstall, a program. Or, a program that's interacting with IE in some
way may need an update to work properly with XP SP2.

For other possibilities see:
