Unable to search Windows Explorer

Whenever I attempt a search in Windows Explorer, all I get
is a message in the right pane reading "to start your
search follow the instructions on the left pane" plus a
small "Search Companion" dialog box containing a yellow
caution sign with an okay button. I've had to install
Power Desk because Windows Explorer is worthless to me
without search capabilities. Any way I can rectify?

If powerdesk fits you, just dont return to windows explorer.
If you like windows explorer better, try to read the instructions again for
solutions maybe.

I've been using computers since Windows 3.1 & have never
run into this problem. My preference would be to use
explorer because a lot of the hidden folders just don't
show up in Power Desk. My problem isn't that I don't know
how to use the search function but rather that there
simply isn't any search function.
