Unable to save large word document

After working on a large word document (8 MEG) for several hours when I tried to save the document I got the message insufficient disk space save to another media. I know this was not true but I then tried saving to an empty ZIP drive and then to a Lexar jump drive but got the same message. I tried clearing the clipboard thinking this may be part of the problem but word would not let me do that. I finally gave up and lost my work. Is there a work around for this? Luckily I had saved once during my work session so I only lost my work back to that point

The word document is this large because it contains a number of pasted in pictures and diagrams

It's always iffy to save to any type of removable media. Can you save to the
HD, then copy to the removable drive?

I originally tried to save to the hard drive and that is when it gave me the disk full message. My hard drive is not full. I have approximately 6 Gig free space on my hard drive. I then tried to save to the ZiP drive and Lexar Jump drive in desperation.

Okay. The "disk full" message is almost always erroneous and indicates some
other problem with the document, though I don't know offhand what it might
be in this case. Sorry.

Maybe the document is corrupt?

The first way to check for a corrupt document is to
copy the entire thing, *excluding* the last paragraph mark, into a new
document. That last paragraph mark holds a lot of information which can get
corrupted, and copying the text into a document with a fresh one keeps your
formatting, but can fix some glitches.

A paragraph mark is a gray ¶. Click on ¶ on the standard toolbar to show
nonprinting characters, including paragraph marks.
