Unable to save JPG, defaults to BMP instead

The following was supposed to have been fixed in IE 5.51.
It just resurfaced after the latest security patches from
MS were supplied. This is the description from the 5.5x
bug.

In Internet Explorer, when you try to save a picture from
a Web page you accessed through a Uniform Resource Locator
(URL) that contains a username and password, you may find
you can save the graphics only as a .bmp file, not as the
original .jpg file format.

Anyone else see this behaviour.

The usual fix is to clear your cache.
IE-Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files (in the TIF section)

That seems to work about 98% of the time but if it doesn't, close IE
and reopen and do it again. Also it has been reported that clear
cookies helps, but ensure you save any that you need.

I cleared out temp. It appears that the IE function would not work as it had grown quite large. I manually delted the files from the folder. After that IE saves properly

I was thrown by the behaviour. Instead of indicating that Temporary Internet Files was full, it would not allow saving a jpg as a jpg or gif as a gif. Anyway, I cleared out my back e-mails of Dilbert now and can go on

I manually [deleted] the files from the folder.

TEMP folder or Temporary Internet Files (TIF) folder(s)?

Delete the latter only via:

Control Panel > Internet Options > General > TIF > Delete files

with no IE windows open. Accept the option to delete all offline content,
too.
