Unable to save images from web pages unless bitmap

I need some help.

A couple of days ago, the following problem began:

When in IE, I right-click on an image, and click "Save Picture As", I can
only save Bitmaps.

In the dialog box that appears, in the box "Save as type", the only option
is "Bitmap (*.bmp)". The drop down list has no other options.

I *know* that the images that I am trying to save are either JPG or GIF
images.

I use an anti-virus program and the virus definitions are up to date, so I'm
fairly certain that the problem is not virus-related.

I am running Windows XP Pro with the latest patches and updates and IE 6.

Any help out there?

I have the same problem, except IE crashes and requests to send an error
meassage. I am running XP Home Edition. Any suggestions? I have tried
emptying my Temporary Internet Files and removing Downloaded Program Files
as suggested below, all to no avail.
