Unable to run System Restore...

Windows XP Professional (32)

This is the first time I've ever attempted to utilize the System Restore
tool. Every time I attempt to run it, it errors out and I get nowhere...same
result whether booted into Windows or Safe Mode, as well as whether I access
the tool from My Computer, Help and Support, System Tools, or manually
loading it from DOS. Here's what I get...

System Restore Application has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Error Signature
--------------------
AppName: rstrui.exe AppVer: 5.1.2600.2180
ModName: srrstr.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180
Offset: 00009826

And, of course, I have the mile-long list of exceptions that I send to
Microsoft every time it errors out.

Any ideas?

Thanx.

Why are you attempting to restore? Symptoms, error messages? If there are
problems with normal boot but successful "Safe mode" boot - driver problem
is indicated.

Hi,

Reinstalling System Restore should fix this.

Tips Fixes & FAQs - How do I reinstall System Restore?

This may work. In case this problem hasn't been resolved ...

I had a very similar problem (xp sp2) with srrstr.dll and rstrui.exe.
I still had the problem after reinstalling.

After some research, I pieced together a course of action that worked.
I don't know if this is applicable to others, but it might be. The
problem with System Restore started after I had used a hard drive copy
utility as part of a hard drive upgrade (Seagate). I guess that the
restore point data was corrupted in this process. In other words, I
suspect System Restore saves some low level information but when this
was copied to the new drive, System Restore wasn't smart enough to know
that it was now running on a different drive. In my case, I have
several partitions besides c: (d through g, don't know if this was a
factor. I believe System Restore would monitor all partitions by
default, although I would only be interested in monitoring C since the
other partitions are for data, sharing, backup, disk images, etc. ---
no system files).

Here's what I did:

I navigated to the System Volume Information folder on C. Here's how
to do that: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309531

I attempted to delete the folder altogether. One file persisted --
don't remember the name but access was denied. I deleted everything
else in the System Volume Information folder. After starting windows
normally, the System Restore tab did not appear when browsing the
System Properties. Then I reinstalled System Restore. Seems to work
fine now.

One other thing ... I didn't mention a couple of other steps. I went
to Administrative Tools in the Control Panel first. I attempted to
disable System Restore (right click on System Restore in the list of
services. I selected Disabled from the "Startup type" list (General
tab) and also selected Disable for profile on the Log On tab. This
seemed to have no effect at the time, but after deleting the data in
the System Volume Information folder and restarting, I went back and
enabled the service for the profile on the listed on the Log On tab (as
I recall, the "Startup type" on the General tab remained on Automatic).
