Unable to run .exe install files

Hi everyone :)

I've just managed to upgrade frmo win98se to XP, and for a
short while it seemed like everything was actually working,
save a few drivers and undetected hardware bits.

Then I discovered that none of my .exe type self extracting
installation files would run (it would extract itself, then
the setup program wouldn't run and windows just sits there
twidling its thumbs) I noticed that whenever I tried to
run these 32bit setup programs, wowexec and the other
process that goes with it starts up, and proceeds to hog
all my system resources.

This is a real problem because it means I cannot install
any of my newer drivers...any help will be much appreciated ^^

Thanks all

Sounds like one of the common old viruses been lurking.

There have been dozens that stop exe's from running - rename one to a .com
if it then runs you have been had!.
Run a good anti virus sweep and off you go!.

Hi, thanks for your replies :)

But unfortunately my system is not infected with any
virus (none that trend micro housecall could detect
anyway) so the problem is elsewhere :( I'm only having
trouble with 2 exes so far:

AVG (free edition...although I don't think I'm supposed
to be using this one since my computer is also a server
for a small home network :p )

and the driver for my Primax colorado 600p scanner, which
I downloaded from the primax site and it tells you to use
the driver for win NT/2000 for XP.

On top of that, my dial up internet connection 'dies'
periodically...i'm still connected, but it seems that
whatever controls the connection has hanged and no data
can be sent or received; I can't even disconnect. My
modem driver (Lucent Win Modem) is on build 8.22, which I
believe is the most recent.

Any more help will be greatly appreciated :)
