Unable to run defrag utility

C

Craig Cockburn

I am periodically getting this error when trying to run the
defragmentation utility

c:\windows\system32\dfrgui.exe
The specified path does not exist

Check the path, and then try again

I checked the path

I even checked the dos path:

C:\Users\Craig Cockburn>path
PATH=C:\Program Files\PC Connectivity Solution\;C:\Windows\system32;C:
\Windows;C
:\Windows\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Wave Systems Corp\Dell
Preboot Manager\
Access Client\v5\;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared
\

I also get the same error with \systempropertiesadvanced.exe and
compmgmt.msc

This is a periodic error, so i'm doubtful that it's solved by a simple
dll registry command

thanks

Craig

Can't help with why this is happening, but if you want to run defrag in the
meantime run it from the command prompt.
defrag /? for help.
....but I have to recommend Perfectdisk as a better defrag app than the built
in tool.

Problem was caused by being unable to run the file. When I right
clicked and ran as administrator it was fine, even though I was using
an administrator account

When you run SET in an elevated cmd window, what does it say for PATHEXT?
Does it show .EXE and .MSC? Mine did not have the .MSC extension and I had
to add it with set pathext=[retype existing line];.MSC and then could run the
advanced settings program and also entered in the pathext setting there. I
still have some episodic trouble with 'path not found' on .exe and .msc
system programs.
