Unable to run as administrator

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit. The "run as administrator" options on the
Desktop and Start Menu shortcuts have quit working; however, they work from
the program folders. I suspect something in the Registry, but I have been
unable to find it. Any suggestions?

Thanks for trying Mark. I hadn't changed anything in the default security
and resetting it to default did not work. My guess it is something to do
with policy, but I'll be darned if I can find it in the gpedit.msc. I just
finished a full image backup of my dual-boot system and was about to do a
repair install when I received your suggestion. Thanks for the quick
response1

No. For instance, if I pin the command box from the Accessories group to the
start menu or copy it to the desktop and right click it the context sensitive
menu has the "run as administrator" option. Clicking on it does nothing
however. Clicking on the short cut itselft will launch the program, but
without the elevated privileges. Right clicking on the shortcut in the
Accessories group and selecting "run as administrator" works fine.

I have tried setting up a new administrative user but the issue remains. I
have scanned the policies in gpedit.msc and the Registry entries and found
nothing set (or not set) that I believe would cause this issue.
Additionally, I tried a repair install and it did not solve the issue. Sure
seems like a policy key is missing, corrupt, or set incorrectly, but I have
no idea which one.

Their properties differ from standard shortcuts & their context menus lack
the "Run as administrator" & "Open file location" options. That's not the
behavior you're seeing, is it?

Hello all,

I hope I am on topic here as it seems similar to our issue here. We
have a domain with active directory. Our Tech support team is of the
old school in XP where they ran 2 accts ...One just a regular Domain
USER acct and another as a Technician with domain admin rights. We are
looking for the *run as...* that used to be available which allowed us
to be in a users account but to fix issue with out have to log the
user off. Please allow me to elaborate if I seem unclear.

Have you installed anything that added any items to the context menus of
these shortcuts? Sometimes that can cause trouble.

Hello Gina,

The "run as" option is not available in Vista via the GUI. It has to be run
from the command line.

Right-click on command prompt and select Run as administrator. Type runas
/? for available parameters.

Keith,
I gave up! I had been running 32-bit Vista Ultimate. I have 4Gb of RAM on
my system so I decided to do a clean install of 64-bit. Problem solved!

Perhaps this may interest some of you. I had heard horror stories of
locating 64-bit drivers, but I had only minor issues. I'm running an Intel
board, dual-core quad processor, HP scanner, and Okidata color laser printer
all of which provide 64-bit drivers. I also have a copy of Acronis image
backup software which is compatible.

Prior to the install I checked and downloaded the drivers I would need. The
one item I miss is Sonicwall's SSL VPN connection which is 32-bit only. I
must fall back to the built-in VPN in Vista. Perhaps someday Sonicwall will
update their software to 64-bit.

Now if only my older MS financial reporting software would work with Vista I
could install it at my office! :{
