Unable to reset Read Only on files/folders

I have a few data folders and files (not program files) on which I seem
unable to reset the "Read Only" attribute.

To reset I right-click on the file and then click on Properties. The first
thing I see is a green rectangle to the to the left of "Read Only." I click
on the green rectangle to remove it from the check box, then click on
"apply" and then on "OK."

When I return to the Properties of that file, the green square is back and
the file
is still "read only."

Can anyone tell me what might be going on?

Thanks

hopefully she won't mind if I copy and paste it here:

The read only attribute on the folder is meaningless except to Windows'
folder customizations. It does not stop reads and writes to the folder.

Something else is blocking your access, possibly permissions or the program
you are using is interpreting the read only flag on the folder incorrectly.
To fix permissions: If using XP Pro, either shift right click the file to
get a security/permissions option in the right click menu or turn off
Simple Sharing in Folder Options> View. If using XP Home, boot to Safe Mode
to get the permissions tab in the properties sheets.

The read-only attribute for folders is by design. It doesn't affect the
files within those folders. Just leave it as is.

Thanks for the comments.

Having experimented, I now see my problem in a different light, so I started
a new thread under the subject "Problem Comparing Shared Files." It's been
suggested to me elsewhere that having two open topics in a News group
violates user ethics somehow -- I hope that isn't so.
