Unable to reinstall xp after sp2 install

My computer has sp2 installed. When I tried to either reinstall window or
create a new install on another drive I got a message that I can't install
windows because the version my pc has is newer than the cd. I can
understand you can't reinstall over an sp2 but a new instalation on another
drive?
The only way around it was to uninstall service pack 2. Any more eligant
ideas?

Bob;
Your original CD is less than SP-2 therefore it is a downgrade.
You can not downgrade.
However you should be able to perform a Repair Installation:

Google this:

Slipstream SP2 Windows XP

I understand my cd is a downgrade from sp2 but I was trying to install it on
another partition. It should not have matered. Also, I did try the
reinstall option (you call it repair)...still the same message. I even
tried two different windows cd's...same message.

I tried a re-install and a new install (to a 50gb partition). I eventually
installed into that partition only by uninstalling sp2.
