an error code "missing micross.ttf" prompted while recovering system and i
pressed esc key to continue. the recovery process seemed frozen after few
minutes. and the winxp can't be access again. since some files haven't been
backed-up, pls suggest a way of recovery rather than a re-installation.

"Recovering system" how? Remember that we can't see your computer from here
and don't know what you were doing or why. Please clarify.

Offhand it sounds like your hard drive has failed, but this is just a guess
since you didn't provide enough information for a more accurate diagnosis.

What have you done so far to correct it? Restart? Cold start?
Logoff/logon? What?

recovery = "To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press
R"
(one of the 3 options shown after booting the system with the winxp
installation disk)

Here are the commands you can use from the Recovery Console:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

You cannot do a repair install from the Recovery Console. You need to be at
the same Service Pack level in order to use the procedure outlined by Michael
Stevens. If your install is at SP3 and your Windows XP disk is SP2; you must
uninstall SP3 before performing the repair. If the machine won't boot, then
you will need to slipstream SP3 into your Windows SP2 disk before you can do
the repair.

You may need to bite the bullet and copy your data off and do a clean
install if a repair install doesn't help. Post back for help with that if you
need it.

i'm in the same level as my winxp hasn't been updated to sp3 (it didn't
worked well on my another one) but had some updates via automatic updates.

now the winxp is not accessible and no data backup has been done. is there
any way i can access it once for backup? since i don't remember the
locations of the files i want and i'm not familiar with dos. thanks.

Boot the computer with a Linux Live CD (I prefer Knoppix) and copy the data
to an external hard drive. If Linux can't see the files, the hard drive may
have failed or the partition table lost and/or the data corrupted. At that
point if the data is crucial and expense is not an issue, send the drive to
a professional data recovery company. I use Drive Savers
(www.drivesavers.com).

If the hard drive has physically failed and you need the data, the only way
to get it is to send it to a company like Drive Savers.

If the hard drive is physically sound but the partition table and/or the
data is corrupted, you may be able to retrieve files with data recovery
software such as R-Studio. Then do a full clean installation of Windows.

Well something is wrong for sure. As that disc should be able to do a
Repair Install to that drive (being the SP level is the same). So the
top two reasons if it can't would be:

1) Windows CD is faulty

2) Or the hard drive is faulty

You don't have any spare hard drives around? If you don't, I would buy
one anyway for backups (get the right type that will fit). So it
wouldn't be a waste of money. Then later buy an external hard drive case
or install it in the computer to get the data out of there at some later
point in time. But with another hard drive, then try to reinstall
Windows from scratch.

If you don't like the another hard drive option, you can reinstall
Windows (not the Repair option) and it *should* allow you to install
Windows in another folder and/or partition. That is if there is enough
room to do so. That way you shouldn't lose anything. Although I don't
think I would use this very long in this state. As Program Files and
other folders will likely share some of the new with the old. Thus not
everything may work correctly this way. Although it might be fine, no
guarantees. And now Windows should run and you *should* be able to
backup all of your data. Unless of course, the hard drive is failing or
your CD is corrupt.

i followed this

but it didn't work. then i used the recovery on winxp installation disk
and
turns out i have the same problem now.

When making clean re-installing XP from CD, you have to continue the the
installation process to the point where you are asked if you want the repair
option for a second time. If you did this, and not all files copied during
the re-installation:

1. the CD needs to be cleaned
2. or the CD drive laser needs to be cleaned
3. or worst case where the CD drive has worn out and is no longer accurate
enough to read all of the files required to properly re-install an operating
system. It will need to be replaced

CD and DVD drives have a useful life of around four years, after which the
laser head starts to decay..
