unable to ping Win2K SBS

C

Craig

I am unable to add any client machines to my Win2K SBS.
When I add one to the network, it will not receive IP by
DHCP. When I put in a static IP, I can ping all machines
but the server. I have tried several new machines, all
with the same result. Any idea's? Can exceeding the
number of client license effect this? The server also
runs ISA.

If you do the ipconfig/all on the client, what do you get? Are the nics set
to obtain an IP and DNS automatically from your server? Which OS on the
clients? How many nics in the server? Are the server and clients fully
patched?

All clients are Win 2K and XP. The Server is multi-homed.
On the lan side DHCP is running on the server. The server
and workstations are fully patched. All clients are on
DHCP and communicating with the server ok. There are
currently 5 client machines. Every time I try to add a
machine, I cannot ping the server or receive DHCP info,
but it will ping all client machines. I have tried
obvious things like changing the position on the switch,
changing the network cable, trying different network
cards, installing a different computer, etc. I have setup
servers and networks for the past five years and have
never ran across this problem. I thought it may be
something with Small business Server that I was not
familiar with. Is there something in ISA or client
license that could cause this? I do not know what else it
could be.

Check the bindingorder (Network Connections, Advanced, advanced) and make
sure the internal nic is on top. Can you post the ipconfig/all from the
server?

Here is the ipconfig /all from the server. The external
address has been edited. The internal card is at the top
of the binding order. Not sure what good this info will
do.

Got options 003, 006 and 015 in DHCP-server, Scope Options? 003 and 006
should point to your server-IP.
On the internal nic server, TCP/IP, Advanced, DNS tab, make sure the
'register in DNS' and 'add primary suffix' is checked. WINS tab, make sure
'netbios over TCP/IP' is enabled.

These options are set to point to the server. If they
were not, the current clients would not work. I have 5
clients on DHCP, and everything works fine (for more than
a year). I just cannot add another client and the new
client cannot see the server.

Not sure! With Small Business Server, the normal license
interface does not work. Even so, Do you think this would
cause this type of problem?

You can only check in the SBS console, somewhere in About or Info.
You can check easily enough. Make sure all other computers are disconnected
and try again. If you succeed, it is a licensing thing.
