"unable to open server service"

this appears after having installed service pack 4 on a
new hp desktop that had windows 2000 service pack 3
preinstalled.

When you look in the mmc there is no server service listed.
 
Make sure you have a registry key call
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer if you do see what the
displayname is set to
 
Remove and re-add "File & Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks" on your
NIC.
