Unable to Open Photos

M

MapleE.

Hi:
There are several photos I e-mailed to my friend who lives next door.

She said that she could not open Photos due to the following error message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing
this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control Panel."

Her computer is about 6-years' old and mine is one year old with Photosmart.

My question is:
"How to open Photos in the older HP model?

Also, another concern is:
If there is a problem due to the older computer, how to e-mail photos
from now on?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Have a look at this article:

(307859) HOW TO: Change File Associations
in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307859

More info:

Try this...open an image folder and right click one
of your image files...from the menu, select...Open
With / Choose Program.

Make your choice from the list or Browse to the
correct program if it is not in the list.

If you want the default...choose..."Windows
Picture and Fax viewer"

Once you make your selection...be sure to check
the box that says: "Always use the selected program
to open this kind of file". (you will need to do this
for each format....jpg, .tif, .gif...etc.)

Also...you can right click an image and choose
Properties / Change Button...choose the program
you wish to use and click...OK / Apply / OK.

Also...in WinXP, you can go to...My Computer /
Tools / Folder Options / File Types tab...

Dear John Inzer:
Thanks for the response. I truly appreciate it.

The problem is my friend's computer.

I can open Photos which is 'attachment' without any problem.

Then, before e-mailing Photos to my friend or relatives, do I need
to change 'folder' option at Control Panel?

In my computer, upon clicking 'attachment' which contains Photos,
they come right away. However, her computer does not allow her
to look at photos, as showing 'Error' about which I described.

What's wrong with her computer? Is it because her computer lacks in
some new 'version' folder which helps her open up Photos?

Also, how do I need to e-mail with Photos so that everyone can look at
photos without seeing 'error' message? Or, is there an 'universal' folder
to look at Photos? Because, mine is 'bluish' icon and her is 'round
reddish' one
in the attachment/photos. Certainly, something is wrong.

Thanks again, ...

I don't think it's an error...it's just a dialog
asking that the file be associated with a
program that can open it.

Ask your friend to save the file to the
desktop and follow the instructions I
posted to associate it with a program
that can open it...Windows Picture and
Fax Viewer...should be adequate.

I don't think you need to change anything...
just be sure that the images you e-mail
are in a universal format like JPEG. If you
send an image in a proprietary format
from an image editing program...it's possible
that a recipient would not have a program
that could open it.

Dear John Inzer:
Thanks for the response, again.

I looked at 'photo' as Attachment which I e-mailed to my friend next door.

It's not JPEG, ... it's "JPG.'

I e-mailed all photos through 'HP Image Zone.' It's ' HP Photosmart 3310
All-in-One.' However, her printer is older form of HP All-in-One along with
older model HP Computer. That' s causing this problem?

Another question is, ....
How to make photos be 'JPEG,' so that receipients are able to open?

Thanks again,

No problem...they are the same.

Why not simply open the folder
that contains the images (My
Pictures...for example) and right
click an image / Send to / Mail
recipient?

One image per message is best.

The recipient's printer has nothing
to do with receiving e-mail.

JPEG, .jpg....are the same.

Is your recipient...after 6 years
of computing....unable to copy
an attachment to their desktop
and follow the instructions for
setting the association?

your friend's computer is
saying that it does not which
program to use to open the pics
you sent her. She may not have
a picture viewing program installed.

you can ask her or help her to download
something like picassa program from from
the google website http://picasa.google.com/

after installing, the program should
setup her pc to open pictures with
it.

Hi:
Her computer has ArcSoftware Suite,' and all photos I e-mailed her converted
'Arc,... ' as seeing icon on 'Attachment.' However, photos did not open up
when
clicking this 'Arc...' icon, the error message popping up, about which I
described in my
first message.

Yes, she downloaded and installed 'Picasa2,' but all Photoes still didn't
open up,
as seeing 'Arc....' icon on each photoes.

Is there anyway for her to open up Photoes I e-mailed? Because, your
suggestion
as to 'installation of 'Picasa2' didn't help.
Or, once removed 'ArcSuite,' the 'Picas2,'
could open-up all Photoes?

Thanks,

D

yeh, theres a couple of ways
to open attachments.

1) if you right click on the
attachment, there will be an "open with"
or choose program with" option.
one of the selections should
be picassa. if selected, then there will
be a check box asking if you want
it to be permanent.

2) the other option is to right
click on attachment then save it
as a file on the harddisk in a folder.
then like all files, you can open up
file explorer, find the folder like the
pictures folder, then double click on
it.

3) another option is to save
the file to hd like mentioned above.
then open picassa and use the file
open menu option.

there is still a couple of other ways,
but let see if the above will help.

it
is unfortunate that picassa didn't default
itself as the preferred picture program.
but sometimes it happens.

let me/us know how it goes...

Hi DatabaseBen:
Thanks for all the help you've been providing.

I found what's the problem after I went to her house to look at her
computer.

She has 'two' computers that have exact same features, age, speed and even
programs.

In the first computer, she can NOT open Photo, but in the second computer
she CAN open photo with ease.

Then, it's the computer, ... not anything like Arc, ... program.

In my guess, for some reason, this 'photo' program, 'ArcSoftware' got lost,
as
seeing Pisca2 does NOT work in her first computer, either.
Or, assuming that some file/folder necessary for opening Photo got
lost or even gone/deleted?

My question is:
How to fix this problem so that she can open Photo easily?

Thanks again.

D

DatabaseBen

ok,
it would help to computer
to have you assign a "file association"
to this/that particular file type.

first of all you need to decide which
program will be the preferred photo
viewer. My guess is that picassa would
be a better selection than arc since picassa
is written/programmed for use with
windows advanced programming/updates.

open the file explorer then
open up the c drive, where folders
and files can simply be seen listed in the window

next go to the menu above and select tools
next select folder options
next select file types

in file types window will list many
file extensions, some you will recognize
and others that are unrecognized but required
by the programs.

next scroll down the 2 column listing
to find the extension you are focused on.

next highlight it, then somewhere below
you will find what program is associated/tagged
to the extension. you should see 2 buttons.

select the change and browse to the
picassa program from a subsequent listing
provided. (keep in mind that at this point you can select
any program of your choosing, if you later change your
mind). then click ok and your way out of this
reprogramming facility.

it might help to reboot so that changes can take
affect. hopefully this will help open that kind of
file automatically. i know that it will in file explorer.
but don't be surprised if it doesnt open the attachmente
without right clicking on the file. this extra step
for email attachments is an added security feature
that keeps any attachments from automatically opening.

some food for thought is that you can send pictures as gif;s
that will appear in emails. and i could be mistaken but
it's either picassa or another program that you can
send pictures easier to and from each other via that
particular program. if i am correct, then it might
help for you to use picassa too. but i am a bit
unsure if picassa is this program with the convenience.

let me know how it goes...

ps: find it a bit odd that your friend
has 2 pc's and one doesnt work. but
whatever the reason may have been to
get another one like it, that dysfunctional
pc could be used to further enhance the
working one, like using the extra ram chip
for the working model. jsut a thought.....

If your friend "next door" can't follow instructions then why don't you go
next door and do it for her.

Have her "save" the attachment to her My Documents" folder
From there "right click" the file name
A drop down menu will appear; Choose "Open With"
Choose a Photo program and "left click" it to open the saved file with that
photo program.

What's so hard about that?

Do it for her.

Hi:
Thanks you all, for the responses and concern. I really appreciate the time
spending to help me/us out this problem.

The friend next door was out most of the day, but I saw her just before
getting dark and went into her house to examine what's going on.

As I followed the instruction, I/We just got 'photoes', ... how to open
Photoes. It's quite easy. Yes, from 'My Document,' we just got photoes
as knowing she gets more from other friends and co-workers at work. Then,
it's not trivial for her to learn, 'how to open photoes' properly.

She said 'Thanks a bunch!'

Thanks again,
