unable to open files on windows xp

I run windows xp and have a wi-fi system connecting pc and laptop. when away
from home with wireless turned off i cannot open word or excel files. please
help

Many possibilities here. Does the laptop use Word and Excel from the
desktop maybe?

Clue us in a bit: tell us what happens when you try to start Word or
Excel when you're not connected to your net. Exactly what error
messages do you see?
