Unable to open Excel file

I have an excel 2000 file on a floppy that refuses to
open. I just get a message: "File X cannot be accessed.
The file may be read only or you may be trying to access a
read only location. Or the server the document is stored
on may not be responding."
It cannot be copied to a hard disc and I have tried
linking to the underlying data from an open workbook (a
technique that has worked in the past), but again get
a "read only" related message.

Any ideas most welcome.

Are you able to email it to yourself as an attachment?? You should NEVER open or save directly
from/to a floppy disk. Work with it on the hard drive and then copy it across using Explorer.
Copy it back to the hard drive when you need to open or work with it.

If that is the only copy of the file, have fun recreating it. It is lost, it is
dead

You have been bitten by the floppy corruption bug. In the future, NEVER save
directly to or open directly from a floppy or a CD. Always copy to HD and open
from there and save to there
