unable to open doc files in word from internet (opens in browser)

on windows xp pro with office 2003...

unable to uncheck "browse in same window" under edit file types! i mean, i
_am_ able to uncheck this selection, and press OK but at the folder options
window "apply" is greyed out. closing does not save my option!

any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
