Unable to map using server name

Dave

I connect to server remotely through VPN. I am setting
up a new laptop using XP Professional. I am able to
ping using either IP address or server name. However, I
am unable to map to a network drive using the server name
but I can map to the drive using the IP Address. For
example, where the server named SERVER has an IP address
of 192.168.0.100 using the mapping of
\\192.168.0.100\Company works, whereas trying to map
\\SERVER\Company does not.

I recall that I when I set up my desktop computer through
the VPN (which is running XP Home)that I needed some sort
of statement in a configuration file to set the IP
Address to the name, but don't recall where it goes.

Any help would be appreciated.

You need to have access to a DNS or WINS server in order to resolve
names over a VPN connection... Add one of the two to your VPN
connection (to a valid DNS or WINS server that serves your companies
private network) and access using names SHOULD work.
